Dakar, Senegal Semester-Abroad Programme
Programme Details
The Dalhousie French Department offers a semester of study at the Université Cheikh Anta Diop (Institut de français pour les étudiants étrangers) in Dakar, Senegal. The semester-long programme at runs from early January to the end of April. The programme is open to students at all levels of French. Students may also choose from a variety of cultural classes at the West African Research Centre (WARC). As a number of courses may be cross-listed, this programme is of particular interest to French, IDS and Sociology students. All classes are given in French.
Credits: Upon successful completion of the semester in Dakar, students will receive five half credits (15 credit hours).
Tuition fees for the winter 2010 semester are $2500:
$500 deposit due June 7
$1000 1st instalment due November 7
$1000 2nd instalment due December 3
Other Costs:
- Return airfare is approximately $2500
- Room and board with a host family is approximately $450 per month
Grants: Possible financial assistance (up to $2000) is available from International Student and Exchange Services through the Study Work Int'l Fund (SWIF). Application forms are available online. These awards are based on financial need. For more information you may call 494-1566.
Vaccinations: for updated details on required vaccinations, you should contact the Nova Scotia Department of Health International Travel Clinic (located in Burnside, 481-5900). Please note that vaccinations are not covered by MSI and can be costly, so you need to factor this into your budget. Be sure to verify with the Dal insurance plan for possible coverage. Some vaccinations are given in series with intervals of weeks or months, so you should contact the Travel Clinic as soon as possible for an initial counselling appointment. Total vaccinations costs are approximately $700.
